Scrapping your car isn’t just a matter of dropping it off and forgetting about it. To do it properly and avoid legal or financial issues, you’ll need to provide a specific set of documents. Here’s everything you need to know.
Required Documentation to Deliver Your Car to the Scrap Yard
Before heading to a scrap yard, make sure you have these documents ready.
VEHICLE DOCUMENTS
- Vehicle registration certificate (Permiso de Circulación).
- ITV Card: This is the vehicle’s technical data sheet, which includes technical specifications, inspection history, and its roadworthiness status.
OWNER'S DOCUMENT
- Valid ID (DNI/NIE) of the car owner (original or a copy).
- If the vehicle is owned by a company, you’ll need the company’s CIF number and the legal representative’s ID.
OTHER DOCUMENTS
- If the owner is deceased, you’ll need the heir’s documentation along with the death certificate.
Step-by-Step Process to De-register Your Vehicle
Once you’ve gathered all the documents, here’s how the process works.
1. Contact an Authorized Scrap Yard (CATV)
Only Authorized Vehicle Treatment Centres (CATVs) can issue destruction certificates and process final deregistration with the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority). Your first step is to contact a CATV and schedule an appointment to drop off the car or arrange for it to be collected.
2. Deliver the Vehicle
Once the appointment is confirmed, you can either drive the car to the center or request collection—if the service is available.
3. Sign the “Certificate of Destruction”
After delivering the vehicle, the CATV will issue a destruction certificate, which confirms the car will be scrapped and recycled in accordance with the law.
4. Deregistration with the DGT
The scrap yard itself handles the notification and deregistration with the DGT. You don’t need to take care of this step personally.
5. Keep the Deregistration Receipt
Once everything is completed, you’ll receive official proof of deregistration. Keep this document in case you need it later—for example, to stop vehicle tax payments or deal with legal matters.
What If You’re Missing Some Documents?
- ID (DNI/NIE): Request it at your local police station or through the official government portal.
- Vehicle registration certificate: You can request a duplicate at your local DGT office.
- ITV Card: Ask for a duplicate at the last inspection station where the vehicle passed the ITV.
- Special certificates (such as death or inheritance certificates): These can be obtained through the civil registry or a notary.
